Conceived from the letter by Pêro Vaz de Caminha, the children’s opera O Achamento do Brasil has music by composer Jorge Salgueiro and libretto by Risoleta Pinto Pedro. Like the concerts previously held by Foco Musical, this show also fulfills pedagogical objectives in terms of active and participative listening. Thus, the audience will be an interventional character in the opera, intervening in moments specially designed for this purpose and prepared in previous sessions, in the classroom.
History develops in the transition from the 15th to the 16th century. The king of Portugal is D. Manuel I and the country seeks to expand its borders by sea. The new discoveries enrich the country’s coffers and the European imaginary, avid for exoticism. It is in this context that Pedro Álvares Cabral departs from Lisbon towards India by sea, however, a deviation from the planned route makes the Portuguese captain reach present Brazil, a territory previously unknown to the Portuguese. On board the ship is Pero Vaz de Caminha, a chronicler in charge of His Highness El-Rei D. Manuel to report the adventures of the trip. It is through your letter on the discovery of Brazil that we know the Portuguese perspective regarding the first contacts between Portuguese and the natives.
